Claire Hughes Johnson

Operator

Ran Stripe's operations as COO for seven years, scaling it from 160 employees to over 7,000, and now serves the company as a corporate officer and advisor; before that, a decade as a Google vice president across AdWords online sales, Google Offers, and the self-driving car project. She wrote Scaling People, the operating playbook distilled from both records.

Johnson’s authority is operating record, not theory. She joined Stripe as chief operating officer in 2014, when the company had roughly 160 employees, and ran that seat for seven years while it grew to more than 7,000 [1][2]: one of the few people in MC’s corpus who ran a company’s operations well past the one-to-a-hundred stage most management advice is written for, into the low thousands. She now sits as a corporate officer and advisor to Stripe rather than an active executive [1][3].

Before that: ten years at Google in a run of VP roles across AdWords online sales, Google Offers, and the self-driving car project, plus responsibility for Gmail, Google Apps, and consumer operations [1]: another decade of scaling seats, at a company two orders of magnitude larger. Before business, she worked in Massachusetts politics, for the state attorney general and on a gubernatorial campaign, before deciding her appetite for risk suited business better [4].

Her word carries real weight on what it takes to run people systems, Hiring, performance management, onboarding, feedback, at a company scaling through hundreds and then thousands of employees, because she is one of the few people MC cites who actually did it, twice, at two different companies [1].
