The question
When an experienced driver, a fast-chess player, or a fireground commander acts well without stopping to think, what is actually happening in the brain [1] — is it really the fast, associative pattern-matching that Stanovich and West named “System 1” [1] and Kahneman popularized in Thinking, Fast and Slow, or something else?
The method
A review of neuroscience findings — dissociation studies in amnesia [1] and Parkinson’s disease [1], imaging studies of skill learning [1] — arguing that experienced coping runs on a third brain system distinct from System 1 and System 2 [1].
The findings
That system, which Dreyfus calls “System 0” [1], is procedural memory [1] — it maps a situation directly into action through synaptic changes built from the totality of past experience, not by recalling facts or associations [1]. It is trained the way reinforcement-learning software is trained [1]: a dopamine-based reward signal from the brain’s limbic system reinforces the actions that worked, the same mechanism (temporal-difference learning) engineers use to train machines [1].
The limits
Dreyfus flags his own earlier account as an example of the mistake. In 1986’s Mind Over Machine, before this neuroscience was known, he and his brother explained expert intuition as pattern recognition, closer to System 1 — a description they revised in the 1988 paperback’s preface [1]. System 0 is also not infallible: because it runs on a hijackable dopamine reward system, it can produce addictive or sociopathic behavior [1].
