The question
This ORC report (prepared for the Air Force Office of Scientific Research) answers: as a person moves from knowing nothing about a skill to mastering it, does the way they think stay the same, or does it change in kind?
The method
Not an experiment — the Dreyfus brothers synthesize documented accounts of skill acquisition [1]: David Sudnow’s ethnography of learning to improvise jazz [1], Adriaan De Groot’s protocols of how chess players perceive the board [1], and the authors’ own pilot interviews and flight-instruction manuals (Introduction) [1].
The five stages, each defined by how the performer relates rules to situations [1]:
- Novice (Stage 1): follows context-free rules applied to features anyone can recognize without experience [1] — reading cockpit instruments by rote, or a chess beginner totaling up each piece’s fixed point value [1].
- Competence (Stage 2): recognizes situational “aspects” only visible with experience, and applies instructor-given guidelines that weigh those aspects equally [1] — a pilot noting he’s “high in the landing approach envelope” [1].
- Proficiency (Stage 3, pp. 10–11): perceives whole situations holistically, aspects now weighted by relevance to a goal, and uses a memorized “maxim” rather than a guideline to pick the action [1].
- Expertise (Stage 4, pp. 12–13): a situation “immediately dictates an intuitively appropriate action” with no conscious rule-application at all [1] — “rather than being aware that they are flying an airplane, they have the experience that they are flying” (p. 13) [1].
- Mastery (Stage 5, pp. 14–15): performance can transcend even the expert’s usual level once the performer stops monitoring their own performance and lets all attention go into the task itself [1].
The report’s core claim is Table 1 (p. 16) [1]: four mental functions — recollection, recognition, decision, awareness — each shift from a “primitive” to a “sophisticated” form, one function transforming per stage in a fixed order, so a learner cannot skip a stage; each sophisticated form presupposes the one before it [1]. As people advance, “he depends less on abstract principles and more on concrete experience” (Abstract, unpaginated front matter) [1]. The training implication the authors draw directly: a training designer must diagnose the student’s current stage, because an aid that helps at one stage can impede advancement to the next, or even trigger regression (pp. 16–17, “Summary and Training Implications”) [1].
