The question
David Wood, Jerome S. Bruner, and Gail Ross set out to describe “the nature of the tutorial process; the means whereby an adult or ‘expert’ helps somebody who is less adult or less expert.” What does a tutor actually do, moment to moment, to make a task achievable for a learner who cannot yet do it alone?
The method
The authors studied thirty children, evenly split across ages three, four, and five, in individual tutoring sessions with a single tutor teaching each child to assemble a 21-block wooden pyramid [1]. This is a small observational study of preschoolers on a physical construction task, not a general theory of learning tested across ages or domains.
The findings
The paper introduces the term “scaffolding” for what the tutor does: a process that “enables a child or novice to solve a problem, carry out a task or achieve a goal which would be beyond his unassisted efforts” by controlling the parts of the task the learner cannot yet handle, leaving the learner to work only the parts within reach [1].
Observed tutoring behavior clustered into named functions. The tutor’s “first and obvious task is to enlist the problem solver’s interest in and adherence to the requirements of the task” (recruitment); she simplified “the task by reducing the number of constituent acts required to reach solution” (reduction in degrees of freedom); she worked to keep “them in pursuit of a particular objective” (direction maintenance); and she “marks or accentuates certain features of the task that are relevant” (marking critical features) [1].
Support tracked age, and shrank as competence grew. The proportion of constructions a child completed with no tutor assistance rose from 64.5 percent at age three, to 79.3 percent at age four, to 87.5 percent at age five [1]. By age five, the tutor’s role had narrowed to confirming or checking work already done: “The 5-yr-old has recourse to the tutor only when he is experiencing difficulty or checking out a construction. The tutorial function, thus, withers away. Indeed, a tutor would be superfluous for a 6-yr-old” [1].
The limits
The sample is thirty middle-class preschoolers building with blocks under one tutor’s supervision, a long way from a manager coaching an adult report through a first negotiation or a first hire. MC cites this paper for the scaffolding concept and its central mechanism (support calibrated to current competence, withdrawn as competence grows), not for effect sizes or for claims about adult or workplace learning, which the study does not test. Scaffolding is also often treated as interchangeable with Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development, the idea that a learner can do more with guidance than alone. The two are related but not the same: Vygotsky did not use the term “scaffolding,” and this paper does not use “zone of proximal development.” Scaffolding is Wood, Bruner, and Ross’s own construct, named and defined here.
